El gobernador de Florida presentó este miércoles la documentación que lo acredita oficialmente como candidato para la nominación republicana. Es considerado como el contrincante más sólido del expresidente Donald Trump en las primarias del Partido Republicano.
Horas después de presentar la documentación formalizando su candidatura, el gobernador de Florida, Ron DeSantis, publicó un video a través de Twitter en el que da inicio oficial a su campaña para conseguir la nominación republicana rumbo a las elecciones presidenciales de Estados Unidos en 2024.
La publicación del video se dio a la par de un espacio de Twitter, donde se esperaba una conversación con el multimillonario Elon Musk, pero luego de minutos de retraso, se informó que estaban experimentando problemas con los servidores.
El anuncio oficial de DeSantis marca el pistoletazo de salida para la contienda más esperada en las primarias del Partido Republicano. El gobernador de Florida es considerado como el mayor contrincante del expresidente Donald Trump, quien busca la presidencia por tercera vez.
¿Quién es Ron DeSantis?
Ronald Dion DeSantis, de 44 años, nació en Jacksonville, Florida. Sus cuatro abuelos nacieron en el sur de Italia y es católico. En 2010 se casó con Casey DeSantis (née Black) y es padre de tres hijos: Madison, Mason y Mamie.
Es egresado de la Universidad de Yale, donde estudió historia y donde fue capitán del equipo de béisbol, del que fue capitán. Posteriormente, ingresó a la Escuela de Derecho de la Universidad de Harvard, de donde se graduó en 2005.
Poco antes de salir de Harvard, en 2004, DeSantis se enlistó en la Armada de Estados Unidos, donde alcanzó el grado de teniente comandante. Sirvió en Irak entre 2007 y 2008.
¿Por qué Ron DeSantis es considerado como el rival a vencer de Donald Trump?
DeSantis inició su meteórica carrera política en 2013, cuando ganó la elección para representar al distrito 6 de Florida (que incluye el sur de Jacksonville y Daytona Beach) en la Cámara de Representantes, un escaño que han ocupado republicanos desde 1989.
En 2018, DeSantis dejó la Cámara de Representantes para buscar el puesto de gobernador de Florida en 2018. Derrotó al demócrata Andrew Gillum por una minúscula diferencia, de poco más de 32,000 votos, un 0.4%.
Pero en 2022, cuando DeSantis buscó la reelección, el resultado fue muy distinto. Logró una cómoda victoria por casi un 20% sobre el demócrata Charlie Christ. Un triunfo contundente en medio de unas elecciones de medio término que arrojaron resultados decepcionantes para el Partido Republicano, que muchos atribuyeron a la enorme influencia de Trump en los comicios.
Fue entonces que DeSantis se consolidó como el contrincante más visible del que era, hasta entonces, considerado como el candidato natural del Partido Republicano. Trump, de 76 años, anunció su propia campaña presidencial en noviembre de 2022.
